Spotify and United establish an in-flight collaboration

Spotify at 35,000 Feet: A Game-Changing Partnership with United Airlines

Spotify just secured a seat at cruising altitude — literally.

In a landmark partnership announced this week, Spotify has joined forces with United Airlines to bring its streaming content directly to the seatback screens of more than 680 aircraft, covering a fleet that flew over 173 million passengers in 2024. The move transforms the in-flight entertainment experience for millions of travelers and marks a bold leap for Spotify as it extends beyond mobile and desktop into high-altitude territory.

📺 From Seatback Screens to Personal Streams

This isn’t just another playlist on a plane. Spotify’s integration will fully replace the traditional “audio” tab in United’s in-flight entertainment menu with a dedicated Spotify channel. Passengers can now access an expansive catalog of curated playlists, hit songs, chart-topping podcasts, audiobooks, and — for the first time ever onboard — video podcasts.

In total, Spotify content will be available across more than 130,000 seatback screens, making this one of the largest entertainment distribution rollouts in commercial aviation history.

By 2026, the partnership will deepen even further: travelers on Starlink-equipped aircraft will be able to log into their personal Spotify accounts on the seatback screens using their own devices, enabling personalized experiences with saved playlists, in-progress audiobooks, and recommended shows.

✈️ United: Leading the Sky in Reach and Tech

As the world’s largest airline by available seat miles (a metric of airline capacity), United’s influence is vast. Airways magazine ranks it at the top in global reach, and with a 5.3% year-over-year increase in passenger volume, the timing couldn’t be better for a fresh content injection.

“Spotify has a huge audience and people love their content,” said Richard Nunn, CEO of MileagePlus, United’s loyalty program. “And now our customers can enjoy it all in a simple and easy way, at 35,000 feet.”

To sweeten the deal, United will offer up to 1,000 MileagePlus bonus miles to new Spotify Premium subscribers, making the experience not just enjoyable but rewarding.

🎧 A Strategic Win for Spotify

For Spotify, this move is more than a visibility play — it’s a strategic step toward platform ubiquity. As streaming competition stiffens and mobile growth slows, Spotify is looking to carve out new distribution pathways. Being embedded into the in-flight experience allows Spotify to tap into a captive, high-intent audience — one likely to engage with long-form content like podcasts and audiobooks.

“As a frequent United flyer myself, it’s incredibly exciting to see Spotify now available on the world’s largest airline,” said Ian Geller, Spotify’s VP of Business Development. “We’re giving creators opportunities to reach new platforms and engage different audiences.”

This isn’t Spotify’s first time onboard, either. In late 2024, the company rolled out curated podcast and playlist offerings in partnership with Emirates. But this United deal goes far deeper, offering a fully integrated ecosystem — and soon, personalized access — to Spotify’s full suite of entertainment.

🚀 Streaming in the Sky: The Future of In-Flight Entertainment?

The United-Spotify collaboration sets a new bar for what in-flight entertainment can be. As the airline industry invests in more tech-forward amenities — like Starlink Wi-Fi and customizable seatback interfaces — partnerships like this one may become the new norm.

For now, one thing is clear: the seatback screen just became the hottest stage for music, podcasts, and storytelling — and Spotify is front and center.

Curious how Spotify’s high-flying expansion compares to its Emirates partnership, or what it means for in-flight entertainment innovation more broadly? Let's dig into the skies.
