Hilary Duff celebrates 10th anniversary of 'authentic' album Breathe In. Breathe Out

Hilary Duff Reflects on 10 Years of Breathe In. Breathe Out. With Humor, Heart, and a Bit of Dance Shame

Hilary Duff is celebrating a major milestone — the 10th anniversary of her fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out. Released on June 12, 2015, the project marked her long-awaited return to music after nearly a decade, with infectious singles like “Sparks” that still hold a special place in fans’ playlists.

To commemorate the occasion, Hilary took a nostalgic dive into her camera roll and shared never-before-seen snapshots from that era — candid selfies, studio shots, and sweet moments with her now-13-year-old son Luca. Alongside the memories, Duff offered a heartfelt, humorous, and refreshingly honest reflection on the album and what it represented in her life.

“It's hard to believe that Breathe In. Breathe Out. is 10 years old today,” she wrote. “While that time in my life has some bright spots, some blurry spots and some uncomfortable pain, I look back with fondness and a now knowing that I ended up exactly where I needed to be.”

Though the album didn’t reach the chart-topping heights of her early-2000s pop fame, Hilary emphasized its deeper significance. Breathe In. Breathe Out. brought her creative opportunities — including collaborations with pop heavyweights like Ed Sheeran, Tove Lo, and Kara DioGuardi — and most importantly, introduced her to producer Matthew Koma, who would later become her husband.

“While Breathe In. Breathe Out. didn't have major success, there was still some work on the record that felt authentic. I see you all blaming yourselves on TikTok — not actually your fault (but really it was), just kidding, but don't let it happen again... next time... okay,” she joked.

Duff didn’t shy away from poking fun at the viral TikTok memes that continue to resurface, especially those mocking her much-memed dance moves from the “Sparks” era.

“And lest we not forget the infamous dance moves that continue to entertain you and make me die a little inside,” she added with trademark wit.

Matthew Koma also joined in the reminiscing, revealing in his Instagram Stories that he wrote the album title in a notebook, which Hilary later snapped a selfie with in the studio. “10 years. Dang. Still remember writing this with @danbook1 in Woodland Hills and then flirting with the talent,” he wrote, nodding to the moment their relationship first sparked.

Now married since 2019 and parents to three daughters in addition to Luca, Hilary and Matthew’s love story is one of the most endearing outcomes of Breathe In. Breathe Out. And while the album may not have been a commercial juggernaut, its personal impact clearly runs deep.

In true Hilary fashion, her anniversary tribute wasn’t just about numbers — it was about growth, gratitude, and finding meaning in the journey. Here's to 10 years of BIBO — and yes, we’ll probably still be laughing at those dance moves for another decade.
